Garden Workshops and Activities

Observe a growing archive of our special activities, campaigns, workshops and talks that take place within the garden, inviting our neighbours and blossoming community to participate in the garden and its growth over time.

The Incredible Edible Parkhurst collaboration is always growing and experimenting, learning from each other and our audience. One of our volunteers, Artworks, has been working hard on making the ideal obelisk or square trellis with found materials. Over time we will be making various sizes and shapes, perfect for planters, veggie beds, climbing plants, bean season and plant pots. If you would like us to custom make you a trellis, please let us know!

There’s an abundance of information about World Earth Day (22 April 2023) and its history on the world wide web, but this year we decided to bring it closer to home and look at the roots of our garden, finding them in our compost making facilities, promoting soil health as well as closing the loop in a regenerative practice that we’re open to sharing with our neighbourhood. If you are interested in talking more, please reach out to Pauline and let her know: growparkhurst.garden@gmail.com.

We learnt so much from Eco Solutions who helped us install our Owl Box, kindly donated by local resident Philippa Robinson. We hope our owl house becomes a home to the Spotted Eagle Owl and a family of owlets soon! June is breeding season and the Spotted Eagle owls are looking for a cavity to roost in, we are trusting that they will find our owl box soon.

Parkhurst was represented by volunteers and neighbours and a journalist from Caxton also attended, our story was published in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette on the 20th June 2023.

A bustling day in the garden yesterday yielded 16 blackberry plants for re -potting, several wheelbarrows of goodness for our compost and a beautifully clear growing space. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and popped in to greet us.

A Hive of Activity!

On Sunday, the 21st May we hosted our very first mini bug hotel workshop and were thrilled with a turnout of families and friends from our neighbourhood and beyond.

All participants dived straight into a wide selection of natural or found objects, sourced from home gardens and charity shops, using their imaginations to think like an insect and design the special mini-insect homes you see in this post.

Generous contributors left a small bug home for @GrowParkhurst. Together they make up a bug village along our tennis court, with some structures tucked away in the planters. Even while we were making the bug hotels, little creatures were attracted to their new home.

Many people went home with their own mini bug hotel, and we imagine these are safely nestled in a corner of their gardens, already welcoming inhabitants. Although these bug hotels are temporary, over time the vessels can be refilled and upcycled with seasonal natural materials available around the community garden.

We also used the time to repair our trellis, irrigation, larger bug hotel and plant some broad beans and sweet peas which we look forward to seeing sprouting.

A big thank you to those who got involved and showed their support.

Our compost is one of our connecting threads between our project and the surrounding community, it’s a way of sustaining our garden, feeding our plants and visibly encouraging ways of creating compost, and closing the loop using eco-systems thinking.

On Sunday the 4th of June in the lead up to World Environment Day, we repaired and extended our compost containers.

Our volunteers attended and assisted with all the activities, and a few families who walked through and interacted with the garden. It was a warm winter day with lots of socialising.

Activities included:
-Repair and extension of our compost containers, with the addition of a leaf mulch/moulding cylinder. We popped some fresh grass cuttings into this to start the breaking down process.
-Frost covering for our tree tomato.
-Group test painting for our owl house signage/naming.
-Compost and Planter box sales.

Overall an innovative, productive and fruitful day in our community garden!

We enjoyed a morning of warming up in the winter sun and enjoying our green space.

On Sunday the 6th of August we planted raspberry plants and tidied up our twenty brick planters. We are always looking for volunteers on days like this. Materials will be provided but, please bring your sun hats, spades, shovels, and garden forks if you’d like to contribute your time and energy, while learning more about our plants and garden.

If you are interested email Pauline: growparkhurst.garden@gmail.com.

Seed saving is important to us, and we have recently started our own seed collection which we will test in the years ahead. Over time we have also received generous donations of seeds from our local community which have contributed to successful seasonal harvests.
